We’re excited to come to you with the latest edition of our newsletter, where we share some of the highlights of what’s going on around the world of emotional intelligence and with PFP specifically.

Update: The People First Podcast

We are now four months into the launch of The People First Podcast, and we want to extend a huge thank you to all of you for listening in and supporting the podcast.

We now have 18 episodes live (you can find them on any of your favorite podcast platforms), with topics ranging from growing your EQ and building your personal brand to diversity & inclusion and female career progression. 

We’re lucky to have had so many incredible guests join us so far, and want to extend a huge thank you to all of our guests for being so generous with their time and wisdom.

The powerful impact of women in the world: EQ

What if I told you that I had a pill that would unlock your untapped potential and exponentially increase your ability to understand, use, and manage your own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict? (Segal, Ph.D et al., 2020)

Well if you are like us here at PFP you would gobble that up in a heartbeat... that pill is Emotional intelligence.

And women have that in spades!

Data from 55,000 professionals across 90 countries and all levels of management, collected between 2011-2015, using the Emotional and Social Competency Inventory (ESCI), found that women more effectively employ the emotional and social competencies correlated with effective leadership and management than men.

“Historically in the workplace, there has been a tendency for women to self-evaluate themselves as less competent, while men tend to overrate themselves in their competencies, research shows, however, that the reality is often the opposite. If more men acted like women in employing their emotional and social competencies, they would be substantially and distinctly more effective in their work.” ~ Boyatzis, Ph.D., Distinguished University Professor, Case Western Reserve University. Women are powerful and strong leaders who when given the opportunity outperform men of similar EQ levels.(Dhania & Sharmab, n.d., #)

Here's the data:

  • 86% of women are more likely than men to be seen as using the competency consistently at their jobs (18.4% of women demonstrate the competency consistently compared to just 9.9% of men). (Korn Ferry, 2016)

  • 45% of women are more likely than men to be seen as demonstrating empathy consistently. (Korn Ferry, 2016)

  • Other competencies in which women outperform men are coaching & mentoring, influence, inspirational leadership, conflict management, organizational awareness, adaptability, teamwork and achievement orientation.  (Korn Ferry, 2016)

“Employees don't leave companies, they leave bad bosses” ~ A common cliché

This data emphasizes a strong need for more women in the workforce to take on leadership roles. Since competencies underpin highly effective leadership and performance, men have tremendous opportunities to learn from women how best leverage EQ in the workplace to become more effective leaders. Since high levels of emotional intelligence displayed by a leader are strongly correlated to how long their team members plan to stay with the organization; leaders with strong EQ create conditions that motivate and inspire team members to contribute to the organization long-term by:

  • Remaining calm during times of turbulence

  • Inspiring and building team consensus 

  • Serving as an empathetic mentor and coade to nurture the next generation of professionals. (Korn Ferry, 2016)

Leaders who tap into their social and emotional intelligence competencies positively impact their teams and drive greater performance throughout the organization. Women are in the best position to do that; so take charge and rally on! Confidently knowing that the world needs your gifts

Book of the month: UnF&ck Yourself by Gary John Bishop

PFP will continue to take a major focus on mental health through the month of May, being mental health awareness month.  Further, the alignment and interconnection of EQ and mental health is very real.  While EQ is not a direct causation connection to one’s mental health, practices common in EQ such as journaling, meditation and mindfulness, self-awareness, emotion regulation, etc are also commonly used and prescribed practices for improving mental health.

Along these lines we chose “Unfu*k Yourself” by Gary John Bishop for our April book of the month.  “Unfu*k Yourself” is part of a line of successful and powerful reads by Gary John Bishop, and in this edition he turns his focus to self-imposed limitations.  It’s a BS-free, self-empowerment guide that offers an honest, no-nonsense, tough-love approach to help you move past your self-imposed limits.

Filled with daily “affirmations,” constant motivation, real-talk and thought-provoking studies and anecdotes, this quick read will be one we think you will revisit time and time again.  Although the audio version, narrated by Gary in his Scottish accent is a great listen, we suggest picking up a physical copy to take notes and revisit the writings/teachings.
